DTC, Sightholders Support Limpopo
The Diamond Trading Company (DTC), the De Beers rough diamond marketing firm, donated over half a million Rand ($68,000) raised by Sightholders at an auction organized at a Business Excellence Seminar in Sun City.
The funds were handed over at a Diamond Council of South Africa Town Hall meeting held in Johannesburg. Two thirds of the funds are earmarked for the Field band Foundation's projects in Limpopo. The remainder will go to Alldays Comprehensive School, also in Limpopo.
In total, the auction raised R2.8 million ($381,000). The rest of the funds have been allocated to a bursary scheme that will be established to support learners from disadvantaged backgrounds who are accepted to attend diamond manufacturing and jewelry design courses at the Kimberley Diamond and Jewellery Academy.
The Academy is being established by the Northern Cape Provincial Government in partnership with De Beers.
"The partnership between the DTC and its Sightholders goes beyond adding value to the diamonds mined in respective producer countries, said DTC Managing Director Varda Shine.
"We also seek other community building opportunities to further enhance our commitment to beneficiation initiatives such as the Shining Light Awards."
